Competent Person
Do you know the difference between IOSH Managing Safely and Chartered Safety Professional?
You wouldn’t hire an accountant who had only five days of accountancy training…
…Health and Safety, like any other profession, has lots of unique language and words that mean very little outside of the profession.
What is a competent person?
A competent person is someone who has the necessary skills, knowledge, and experience to help your business discharge the legal duties for health and safety.
Examples of competence may include:
Experience in operational roles of the business
Formal training (this can range from 1 day to 5 years or more)
Professional membership of a recognised organisation (IOSH, RoSPA, IIRSM, BSC)
Knowledge of the legal duties placed on your business for occupational health and safety
A person who has completed a “Managing Safely” course has only the most basic level of training in managing health and safety for your business.
